Celebrating the King’s Coronation

Last week, all of our Devon Nurseries celebrated King Charles III‘s Coronation. The children of Devon Nurseries were making crowns learning about what happens at the coronation; exploring colours of the Union Jack and celebrating with a English style tea party! The cakes were for sure the favourite bit!
It’s super important for young children to celebrate different events, especially ones that happen where they live. Celebrating events can help children develop social, emotional and cognitive skills. It can also help them foster a sense of community and belonging.

Coronation Activities
Our Devon Nursery, Acorns, had a whole day celebrating the King’s Coronation tailoring activities to suit the different ages at the nursery.
Our youngest children in the Snug have been exploring the colours of the Union Jack through crown painting! The staff set out paints to match the colour of the flag and encouraged the children to express themselves artistically. They compared the colours they were using to the colours in the flag. They also repeated new words such as “King” and “Queen” as the staff explained how the King and Queen wear crowns, like the ones they were making. They loved wearing their crowns whilst playing with red, blue and white balloons afterwards.
The Burrow have been exploring different themes surrounding the Coronation in a Union Jack tuff tray. The aim of this activity was to encourage the children to show interest in the Coronation and use theme specific language. After Sam explained that this weekend we would have a new king, the Burrow got stuck in! They explored items and used language such as “Crown” , “King” and “Big Tower.”

The Hive have been cooking up some royal treats making the King’s signature dish, a quiche for the tea party in the afternoon. They have also been learning about the King’s guards and have coloured some King’s guards paper chains.
For our oldest children, the Den, after the children made their own crowns, we had a little coronation of our own! The children took turns deciding if they wanted to be king or queen and were crowned in the throne. The aim of this activity was to teach the children exactly what was happening this weekend. Our Preschoolers were all very brave, came up to the front and exclaimed “I will be king/queen!”
