Spanish Lessons at Acorns
The ages between 0-5 are the perfect ages for a child to be exposed to a new language as they are very receptive to learning. Their brains are like sponges from learning maths to walking, so why would learning words for a new language be any different?!
Learning a new language can also help children boost their ability to problem solve and improve memory & concentration.
At our Devon Nurseries, we are constantly encouraging children to be brave & curious; try new things and learn new words – even words not from their first language! At our Acorns Nursery, we’ve been having some very exciting Spanish lessons!
What we've learnt!
Carmen from Kidslingo has been visiting Acorns Nursery on Thursdays in May to teach our older children new words in Spanish!
Every session starts with an “Hola” and a welcome introduction for the children to start introducing themselves in Spanish saying “Me llamo ….”
The confidence in the children grew so much in the four weeks of sessions and now all the children can independently introduce themselves!
Each session, the children are exposed to new vocabulary through a range of exciting games, dances and songs.
For example, in week one they listened to Carmen teach them different colours such as “rojo” for red, “azul” for blue, “verde” for green, “naranja” for orange and “amarillo” for yellow as they played with different coloured flags, waving them every time their colour was mentioned.
Also, in week two, they learnt objects that fly such as “pajaro” for bird, “avion” for plane, “mariposa” for butterfly, “helicoptero” for helicopter , “marquita” for ladybird and “cohete” for rocket whilst flying around their special cohetes!
The Spanish lessons always end with a “Gracias” and an “Adios” and all of the children are confident in using and translating these words.
Parent Partnerships
The children have thoroughly enjoyed the Spanish lessons and we’ve had such great feedback from our Acorns parents saying things such as:
- “She has been loving Spanish lessons. She jumps for joy each Thursday morning when I remind her. I think they must have learnt a song about ‘amigos’ as she has been singing this word on repeat which has been rather lovely.”
- “He does use some Spanish words at home. He did count to 5 the other day, all by himself, without being prompted to, and he does mention some colours when colouring his books.”
- “She’s been using Spanish at home. Mainly saying hola, adios and me llamo Nelly!”
From even just 4 sessions, the children have benefited so well!
At home, you can try some of these things:
- Keep practising words with your Preschooler that they have learnt in the session. We always post the words they have learnt on Famly!
- Watch Kidslingos videos on Youtube with your child!
- Learn with them! Try Duolingo.
- Adventure out and visit a foreign country for your child to attempt new words!
The Spanish lessons have been such a success, so we are going to continue them through June & July! ¡Que interesante! ¡Vamos!
Our ABC children also had a special Spanish lesson. Check it out here!
