St. Patrick's Day Celebrations at Discovery
At our Devon Nurseries, we have children from all over the world and so multicultural holidays must be celebrated! On Friday 17th March, the children at our Discovery Nursery enjoyed some St. Patrick’s Day celebrations! The special day commemorates Saint Patrick and the arrival of Christianity in Ireland. Let’s celebrate the Irish shall we?
Arts & Crafts
We had a great morning and taught the children about the flag of Ireland and the Irish shamrock by getting creative. Angela spoke with the children about the flag’s colour sequence and encouraged them to make one themselves! The children were very meticulous in making sure the green stayed on the left and the orange stayed to the right. They also took turns drawing green shamrocks as Angela explained that shamrocks were the symbol of Ireland. A child told the staff it “Looks like a clover!” and they explained that “shamrock means young clover!” What a clover clogs!
The Real Celebrations!
We all know the best part of any celebration is the food and the party! So we got movin’ , groovin’ & eating.
The children watched some traditional Irish dancing paying careful attention to the quick movements of the feet before they got up and had a go. We had little feet flying, hands on hips and giggles all round as the children let loose and practised their Irish moves. A pot of gold for them all!
For lunch we had a traditional Irish dinner suggested by one of our Irish parents. The children enjoyed gammon, potatoes & cabbage with parsley sauce followed by Porridge Cake that the Inventors made the day before. Yum! During lunch, we spoke about our favourite foods from around the world. “Pasta!” from Italy was a popular choice!
At Devon Nurseries, celebrating all cultures is very important. Give children the opportunity to celebrate, learn and enjoy cultures from around the world and we help them to gain an understanding of the diverse world they live in.
